Belgium is the World Capital of French Fries

What country do you think french fries are from? While the name might suggest that these fried potato treats come from France, did you know that the home country of one of the world’s favorite foods is actually a different European country?

That’s right, french fries should really be called “Belgian fries,” because they come from the country of Belgium! Back in the late 17th century, sources documented the existence of families that deep-fried strips of potatoes in oil during times of hunger.

This was done in the Wallonia region of the country, which is French-speaking. This might explain the name that this food has in current times.

After spreading across Europe, and then the rest of the world, french fries are now well-known as a side dish and snack food on the entirety of the planet.

They still have an especially strong cultural and gastronomic meaning in Belgium, the dish’s home country. Belgians can often be found on the street clutching cones full of french fries topped with various sauces such as ketchup and mayonnaise.

So, don’t be confused. French fries aren’t actually French in origin, but rather Belgian! If you find yourself walking the streets of Brussels, Liege, or Ghent, be sure to order some frites and enjoy a typical Belgian experience!
