When most of us think of brussels sprouts we think of the charred leafy thing our mothers made us eat when we were kids. They usually taste like dirt or don’t taste like anything at all.

Unfortunately, they’re also super healthy for us. That’s why we found the perfect recipe that makes these greens taste sweet and yummy.

Tips and Tricks

The number one thing to remember with sprouts is that you have to get them fresh. The bland, dirt-like flavor usually happens when they’ve been sitting in a freezer for weeks.

The smaller the sprout, the more natural sugars it has. Avoid the bitter cabbage flavor by buying the runts of the stalk.

When eating Brussels sprouts raw (in a salad or slaw), it’s best to massage them. That’s right, a massage. This may seem way too high maintenance, but this will soften them up and bring out their flavor.

How to Cook Them

Brussels sprouts actually have a lot of natural sugars, so sautéeing them will create the perfect caramelization. Toss in a pan with some oil and sautée until brown. Pairing with bacon or sausage will bring out the smoky flavor.

Roasting them is the easiest way to prepare them. Cut the sprouts in half and toss with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Cook in an oven at 400 degrees for at least 15 minutes.

And the number one rule… never boil them!
