Sushi originated from Japan, but it’s safe to say that it’s broken into Western culture pretty heavily over the last few decades. It’s hard to find a city in the world that doesn’t have a plethora of sushi restaurants, and certain cities are full of them. However, just because Western society has ingratiated sushi into its loving, capitalistic arms, doesn’t mean the people eating at these restaurants are doing it “correctly.” Or at least not if you ask certain Japanese people. Indeed, some sushi spots that consider themselves authentic will get offended if you do this one thing.

We’re Getting Sauces Wrong

If you go to a truly authentic sushi spot—whether it’s in Japan, or run by those who consider themselves “legit”—you’d better be careful when it comes to the sauces. And by that, we mean that you shouldn’t ask for any. When you sit down and realize that they haven’t served you teriyaki or spicy mayo, it’s not an accident. They don’t consider it proper to eat sushi with those sauces, so you probably shouldn’t ask them for it.

Soy Sauce and Wasabi

Soy sauce and wasabi, on the other hand, are fair game. According to them, these are the real sauces that should accompany your sushi, and not much else.
