There are many foods out there that have a strong connection to religion, and that’s certainly the case with Matzah and Judaism. If you’ve ever been to a supermarket and seen a box of these around springtime every year, it’s probably because Jews all around the world are preparing for their Passover holiday. Matzah is intended to be eaten on this holiday, and here’s why it holds such significance.

The Bread That Didn’t Rise

The entire Passover holiday revolves around the story that thousands of years ago, the Jews escaped from a life of slavery in Egypt. On the very night that the Jews escaped, they took all the bread that they had been cooking in their ovens—but the only problem was, they were in such a hurry that the bread had no time to rise. The result was the cracker-like bread known as Matzah. This is the core of the reason the Jews eat it every year during Passover—as a reminder of their freedom.

Ways to Enjoy Matzah

If you’d like to try this tasty snack, there are many ways you can enjoy it. One way is to simply eat it on its own, which is always a good choice, especially with some added salt. But if you want to be a bit more adventurous, Matzah goes very well with all kinds of spreads, from cream cheese to butter. It’s also very customary for people to add tomato sauce and cheese and heat it up in the oven for some “Matzah Pizza”. Enjoy!
