Whether its whisky, whiskey (the Irish kind), or bourbon, whiskey drinking always feels like a serious, grown-up matter. If you like these tastes but also want a lighthearted, summer nights sort of drink, a New York would be the perfect cocktail for you. It’s classy and looks beautiful with the red topping and you can pretty much make it at home when you enjoy a quiet evening out in the garden.

If you’re having people over, you might want to prepare the whiskey mix in advance and leave the pouring for the last moment to get the full effect of the two layers.

Ingredients:

  • 1-ounce lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon syrup (a simple syrup made of sugar and water)
  • 2 ounces bourbon or rye whiskey
  • 1/2 ounce red wine
  • Ice

Method:

  • Put all the ingredients besides the red wine into a shaker and shake
  • Strain and pour over some fresh ice, leave some space on the top
  • Gently poor the wine over so that it floats on top.
