Buying food in bulk is a great money saver, but it simply doesn’t work every time. Certain foods go bad quickly, so it’s better to buy them in smaller amounts, and these five fall under that category.

Flour

Flour is one of the most common things that people buy in bulk, but it’s important to keep in mind that it will suck up moisture in the air as time goes by. Stick to buying five-pound bags, unless you bake every day.

Cooking Oils

Cooking oils begin to go rancid and oxidize pretty quickly, and that’s why bulk buying probably isn’t the best idea.

Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds shouldn’t be bought in bulk for the same reason as oil, but storing them in a cool, dark spot can prolong their shelf life.

Coffee

The fresher your coffee is, the better it will taste. That’s why it doesn’t make sense to buy enormous bags of coffee—they may last longer and cost less, but the taste probably won’t be up to your standards.

Spices and Herbs

Your spices and herbs won’t necessarily go bad when you buy them in bulk, but they’ll go stale and lose their flavor, which pretty much makes them useless.
