How many times have you wanted to cool yourself down with some ice cream only to take it out of the freezer and find it rock hard, covered in ice crystals, and unscoopable? Probably one too many as the freezer isn’t always kind to this tasty treat. The same happened to us countless times until we started using some helpful hacks that kept our ice cream soft and scoopable. Wanna find them out? Continue reading below.
Ziploc Bag
Before storing your ice cream pint into the freezer, put it inside a Ziploc bag, press the bag to remove excess air, and then seal it. This works like a charm since the Ziploc bag prevents the temperature inside the ice cream container from getting too cold. The next time you take it out, it will be creamy, soft, and unbelievably scoopable.
Parchment Paper
Another way to avoid hard ice cream and ice crystals is to cover the ice cream surface with parchment paper before returning the lid on. It works similarly to the Ziploc bag hack, serving as a barrier between the cold air and ice cream.
Upside Down
If you don’t have a Ziploc bag or parchment paper around, you can try storing the ice cream container upside down. The idea is that the melted ice cream will make its way to the lid, which will prevent the rest of the ice cream from getting spoiled by ice crystals.
Damage is Done?
In case that your ice cream is already too hard to be scooped, there is a simple trick that will help you scoop it. Take your spoon and run it under hot water for 30 seconds. The hot metal surface will dive into the ice cream easily and kickstart the process of melting sooner.
