Steak is a popular summertime choice for grilling, with people all around the world obsessed with this staple food. And while those who choose to avoid eating meat might feel as if they cannot take part in eating this food, that actually couldn’t be further from the truth!

There are plenty of plant-based staples that can be used to imitate a traditional steak, including certain vegetables which do a great job of stepping in to provide a steak-like flavor and texture. Here are three which you should try on your grill!

Portobello Mushrooms

Portobello mushrooms are the heartiest and “beefiest” type of mushroom, and their texture and size make them a great choice as a steak substitute. Marinade or season them as you would any old steak, throw them on the grill, and enjoy!

Eggplant

Eggplant is used as a vegetable substitute in dishes such as veal (eggplant) parmesan, so it’s no surprise that it’s also a brilliant substitution for steak. Cooking it on high temperatures will yield a crispy outside and a delicious, meaty interior.

Cauliflower

Believe it or not, if you know how to prepare it, cauliflower is also a capable substitute for steak. Cooking it on the grill yields the best results, but this is also a decent option to prepare in an oven as well.
