There is no denying that mashed potatoes are at their best when freshly made. But this doesn’t mean the leftover mashed potatoes can’t be a good dish as well. You just need to know how to properly reheat them.

Due to their consistency, mashed potatoes are notoriously hard to reheat. They may look good on the outside after, but when you dig in, you discover an infinite number of lumps or a cold part that immediately ruins your dining experience. In order to avoid this from happening and enjoy leftover mashed potatoes at their finest, try some of the following techniques.

Oven Reheat

Did you know that you can reheat your mashed potatoes in the oven? While it might sound a bit sketchy, the truth is that popping leftover mashed potatoes in the oven is one of the best ways to reheat them.

Put the mashed potatoes in a covered heat-resistant container and add a splash of milk/cream and butter to them. Dial the oven to 350F and let the mashed potatoes in for around 20 minutes. You can take out the mashed potatoes halfway through and give them a thorough whisk to leave no room for error.

The reason why this technique works is that the oven doesn’t dry out the mashed potatoes while warming them up evenly.

Stove Reheat

You can also use your stove to reheat the mashed potatoes efficiently. Transfer the mashed potatoes to a heat-resistant bowl and add some milk/cream and butter to them. Place the bowl over a pot of boiling water and stir frequently.

This technique works surprisingly well, but be wary that mashed potatoes can easily overheat if you are not careful enough.

Microwave Reheat

Reheating mashed potatoes in the microwave is probably everyone’s favorite way to do it. It’s quick, simple, and usually does a solid job. But why content with solid when you can have a great outcome with just a few added steps.

Mix some butter and milk/cream into the mashed potatoes and cover them with a damp towel or a plastic wrap. Microwave for one minute at half power and mix thoroughly. Repeat the process until you get the perfect mashed potatoes.
