A cutting board is one of the most common tools we have in our kitchen and we have a habit of keeping them for much longer than we should. There comes a moment when it’s time to throw away your old cutting board and replace it with a new one, and here are three warning signs that you should pay attention to.

Significant Damage

Once you notice significant signs of damage on your cutting board, such as grooves and deep scratches, it’s time to say goodbye. In addition to being visually unappealing, damaged cutting boards should be replaced because they can trap moisture in their cuts and grooves, becoming a breeding ground for bacteria.

Difficult Cleanup

If you’re struggling to wash your cutting board properly due to scratches and water spots, it’s time to consider getting a new one. Cutting boards are generally pretty easy to clean up when they’re in a good shape.

Wooden vs. Plastic

Plastic boards can’t be saved once there are significant signs of damage on their surface, but that’s not the case with wooden ones. You can sand their surface and keep using them again—your board will be a little bit thinner, but you can still keep using it.
