If you’re interested in interesting international foods, you might want like to learn about Romanian cuisine, which is a very diverse blend of several different traditions including Turkish, Balkan, Hungarian, and other European cultures. Featuring lots of meat and vegetables, it’s a great choice for the colder months. So as fall gets chillier, here are three Romanian dishes we recommend trying to cook.

Sarmale

If you’re interested in having super yummy and satisfying comfort food and have a full day to spare that you can use to experiment in the kitchen, then sarmale is our recommendation. This dish consists of cabbage rolls stuffed with beef and pork, and it’s a perfect food for a crowd. Make them right and they’ll pretty much melt in your mouth.

Mămăligă

If you like polenta, you’ll love mamaliga, a Romanian cornmeal porridge that used to be considered peasant food but is now beloved by all. It’s quite simple to make with a very short list of ingredients, so unlike sarmale, you won’t need to set aside an entire day to make it. Don’t forget to get sour cream, fresh cheese, and herbs for topping!

Ciorbă

There’s no better food to make during the winter or when you have a cold than ciorba, a traditional Romanian sour soup made with vegetables and meat. It’s though to have health benefits, which may come from the probiotic ingredients that give ciorba its signature sour flavor.
