French cooking is known to be an art, with dishes including extravagant items such as jus, soufflés, and gratins. Yet, the culinary masters also understand the beauty of a simple sandwich using the finest ingredients. These are three sandwiches we’re grateful to the French for inventing.

Jambon Beurre

If there’s anything we’ve learnt from French cuisine, it’s that simple can be oh so delicious. The Jambon Beurre is a classic example. Made on a baguette (it is French, after all!), using ham and salty butter, it relies purely on the quality of the ingredients used. In case proof was required, more than three million of these sandwiches are sold everyday!

Croque Madame

The Croque Madame is a spin on the classic Croque Monsieur, which, itself, is an upgraded version of a Jambon Beurre. Still with us? In short, a Croque Monsieur is the French version of a grilled cheese and ham, while a Croque Madame includes the addition of a fried or poached egg.

Pan Bagnat

If you’re a fan of salade niçoise, you’ll adore this sandwich. A Pan Bagnat (pronounced “pa ba-na”) is what happens if you take the famous salad—comprising of green peppers, onions, tomatoes, black olives, and tuna—and place it between two pieces of French sourdough. Naturally, it is a huge hit in Nice.
