When you buy fruit, you expect it to be ripe and ready to eat. But that isn’t always the case. Farmers can’t keep track of every single fruit during harvesting, so they’ll occasionally send some unripe fruit to the grocery stores. And you’ll end up buying them unaware that they are not packing the flavor you want. But worry not! Having unripe fruit isn’t the end of the world as you can ripen it at home, and here’s how.

Paper Bag

This is one of the easiest ways to have ripe fruit in no time. Just take your unripe fruit and place it inside a paper bag. Close the bag and leave it at room temperature. Revisit it a day or two later, and you’ll have ripe fruit.

This method works thanks to the fact that all fruit release gas called ethylene. The gas helps the fruit get ripe, and when closed in a paper bag, it does its function a lot better. The method works with avocado, bananas, peaches, plums, and even tomatoes.

Linen or Cotton Cloth

This method is best for soft-skinned fruit like peaches, nectarines, and plums. Take your fruit and place it on a linen or cotton cloth. Put another piece of cloth on top and tuck it gently, so there are no openings for the fresh air to get in. Enjoy your ripe fruit after few days.

Rice

Submerging your fruit into a bowl of rice is also a great way to get it ripe, as rice also allows ethylene to do its magic. This works best with fruit that has hard skin, including mangos and avocados.
