3 Easy Steps for Making Brown Butter

Butter is, undoubtedly, one of the greatest elements that can be added to a dish. We don’t know what sorcery is involved, but adding butter just somehow makes everything better. With an ingredient that is already so incredible, it’s difficult to imagine that it could possibly be improved upon—but trust the French to do it.

Beurre noisette, which translates to “nutty butter”, is a caramelized version of the spread that is commonly known as brown butter. Created by gently cooking the butter, it results in a much bolder flavor that is magnifique in both sweet and savory dishes.

If you’re ready to take your butter adoration to a whole new level, follow these steps.

Step #1

The first thing that needs to be done is turning the butter from a solid to a liquid. Break out a thick-bottomed skillet and place it on the stove on medium heat. Add around 8 tablespoons of butter and whisk frequently.

Step #2

Exciting things should be starting to happen — both in the pan and in the air. Once the butter has melted, it will begin to foam slightly and a warm, nutty aroma will start to emerge.

Step #3

By now, the butter will have changed color to a rich brown. As we don’t want it to run the risk of burning (which will leave it black and bitter), remove the liquid from the heat and pour it into a bowl.

Step #4

It is perfectly fine to stop at Step #3 if you wish to cook with the beurre noisette. However, if spreading the brown butter on bread is your goal, place the bowl over another one filled with water and ice and whisk vigorously until the butter begins to solidify again.
