3 Drinks to Avoid on a Hot Summer Day

Staying properly hydrated is more important than ever once summer arrives, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you should reach for just any beverage. Here are a few that will do you more harm than good.

Soda

In addition to being loaded with sugar and caffeine, soda and energy drinks can cause the symptoms of dehydration. Coca Cola and similar drinks will still quench your thirst on a hot summer day, but they should be your last resort and not no. 1 choice.

Coffee

Research has shown that drinking hot coffee in the summer can actually help you cool down by increasing sweat production. That doesn’t change the fact that it may lead to dehydration and an increase in body temperature, so it’s better to drink it in moderation.

Alcohol

Alcohol is another well-known diuretic, and it makes the body lose fluids faster, upping the risk of dehydration. If you end up attending parties and family gatherings where alcohol is served this summer, at least remember to drink water, as well.
