Vegetables are supposed to be good for you, but not all vegetables are created equal. It’s especially important to know which veggies are healthier if you have a chronic illness. For people with diabetes, for example, some vegetables can be very bad. Here are some of the best and worst vegetables you can eat when you have diabetes.

The Best Vegetables

  • Broccoli contains a lot of fiber and nutrients, but very little carbohydrates and calories. You can boil it, roast it, or prepare it with parmesan.
  • Cabbage, whether raw or fermented, is an amazing vegetable for people with diabetes, mostly thanks to its low carb content and high fiber content.
  • Cauliflower is popular right now and for a good reason. It’s a great choice for healthy people as well as for those with diabetes, so find a way to include it in your diet.

The Worst Vegetables

  • Potatoes may be the most popular vegetable, but they are not very good for diabetes as they are mostly made of starch. They do contain fiber, but they also have many times more carbs.
  • Peas are somewhat better if you need something starchy, but be cautious as they also contain a lot of carbs. You can have a small portion occasionally if you can’t resist them.
  • Vegetable juice is tricky as it seems like a healthy choice, but it lacks the fiber that you get from whole veggies.
