As the weather gets hotter and more humid, you’re probably looking for some sweet, refreshing treats that will help cool you down. Ice cream is a great option, but it’s also loaded with fat and is also not vegan or lactose-intolerant friendly. If you’re looking to try something new, here are three ultra-refreshing desserts that aren’t ice cream.

Korean Shaved Ice

Called Bingsu in Korea, this delicious and unique dessert is made by shaving frozen cream or milk into a snow-like mound of goodness. It comes in many different flavors and is also sometimes topped with ice cream. It’s also topped with syrups, candy, cookies, and plenty of other options!

Italian Granita

Granita is somewhat comparable to sorbet or a slushie, except its ice crystals are larger which gives the texture more crunch and less uniformity. It’s also simple to make, using only water, flavorings, and sugar. You can make it yourself by mixing these up and putting them in the freezer, then scraping and breaking up the ice crystals as they form, about every half hour as it freezes.

Smoothie Bowls

Made well, a smoothie bowl is a creamy and thick treat that can easily measure up against sorbet or fro-yo. The difference? It’s all fruit, and very little extra sweetener and often no dairy is added! This is a healthy but still rich alternative to ice cream when you need to cool down but still want some nutrients.
