Green onions are a staple in so many dishes, especially Asian-inspired meals. From miso soup to ramen to scallion pancakes, these flavorful onions have so many uses. You’re probably used to buying a bunch at the grocery store whenever you plan on making a recipe that requires green onion, but did you know that you could regrow green onion with the scraps left over? It’s true. You will never need to buy green onions ever again with this hack.

When you buy green onions at the store, they usually come with the roots still on the ends. Of course, you don’t use these in your recipe, so you cut them off and then they end up in the garbage with the rest of your food waste. Before you throw out these ends next time, though, save them and do this.

Put the roots in a cup of water. Leave it on your counter, and within a few days they will already be regrown! They actually grow so fast you’ll be scrambling to find even more recipes to use your endless supply of green onions. You can also plant them in soil after they start growing, which slows down the speed at which they grow back.
