Finding good quality knives doesn’t come easy, and it would be much easier to have someone else buy one for us. Unfortunately, people often avoid giving knives away as a present because it’s considered bad luck, but are they really such a controversial choice?

Knives carry many symbolic meanings, so it’s not a surprise they were at the center of many superstitions to emerge in different cultures over the centuries. According to one of them, gifting a knife is best avoided because its sharp edges represent a potential threat to the harmony between people and can sever relationships and bring bad luck.

This superstition persisted over the years, and many people still abide by it. Some even go as far as to attach a coin to the knife when giving it away, allowing the recipient to return the coin to the giver as a way of “buying” the knife, thus preventing their friendship from breaking off.

If you’re not superstitious, there’s nothing wrong about knife-giving, but there are several persecutions worth keeping in mind. Just like with any other gift, make sure that the recipient will be happy about this one and only buy them for people who are passionate about cooking or knife collecting. Also, make sure your gift is packed properly and comes in a firm box due to safety concerns associated with knives.
