Passover is on our doorstep and it’s time to break out all the traditional foods. One thing adorning every Seder plate is charoset. The apple-based paste symbolizes the mortar used by the Jews while they were slaves in Egypt, but thankfully it tastes a lot better.

Ashkenazi-style charoset features apples, walnuts, red wine, and cinnamon, but those from Sephardi countries do it a little differently. This version hails from Iraq, offering a Persian twist on the classic recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1 x cup of date syrup (silan)
  • 1 x cup of raw walnuts
  • 1 x cup of raw pecans

Method

  1. Place the pecans and walnuts in a food processor and pulse 3-4 times. You want to get a chunky texture.
  2. Pour the date syrup into a serving dish and cover with the chopped nuts.
