Tomatoes have so many uses in cooking that people usually keep large amounts of them in their kitchen. This way, they don’t have to go to the grocery store each time they want to cook up marinara sauce or make a tasty salad. But there is one big downside to this.

Tomatoes usually won’t remain fresh for long. They might not spoil, but they will lose some of the qualities that make them so desirable. Unless, of course, you use a hack or two to prevent this. And no, we are not talking about storing them in the fridge.

Tape the Stem Bump

It might sound weird, but it totally works. Just cut a piece of tape, any will do, and place it on the stem bump. Then leave the tomatoes at room temperature stem-side up and be amazed at how well they hold up. The trick here is that the tape prevents air from reaching the steam and speeds up the development of mold and bacteria. Without mold and bacteria, your tomatoes will remain fresh for more than a week.

Freeze the Tomatoes

If you bought tomatoes to last you for a month, then your best choice is to freeze them. Then, when you intend to use them, take them out of the freezer and leave them to defrost on the kitchen counter or in the fridge. They will taste just like you bought them recently.

Store Them Stem-Side Down

If you don’t want to tape every individual tomato, then storing the stem side down will give a similar result. The surface that the tomatoes are resting on will block the air and prevent mold and bacteria from spreading.
