The Formula for the Perfect Dressing

Every good dressing relies on 4 simple factors: a base, acidity, sweetness, and herbs. By following the formula, you can play around with flavors and make a dressing to suit any salad.

Base

It goes without saying that the base of most, if not all, salad dressings is oil. Olive oil is the premier choice as it not only has a wonderful flavor but also reduces inflammation and lowers the risk of heart disease. That said, other types of oil can work equally as well in your dressing. Give sunflower oil or avocado oil a try.

Acidity

Even if you’re not a fan of sour things, a little acidity is necessary. The good news is, you can add as much or as little as you like. Lemon juice; balsamic, white wine, or rice vinegar; Dijon mustard; and even tomatoes are all great options.

Sweetness

Sweetness doesn’t have to mean sugar (although you can use that if you want). Honey is a favorite, but you can also explore fruits like oranges, strawberries, or blueberries.

Herbs

Here is where you make your flavor pop. Throw in some aromatics like garlic, ginger, and onion; or chop up fresh herbs like basil, coriander, and dill. Go wild.
