When having dinner or a late-night snack, you may want to think ahead to bedtime. If you have trouble sleeping or just want to hedge your bets for a food night’s sleep, there are some foods you can eat that may help you get to sleep. Here are a few foods which help promote restful sleep.

Turkey

Remember on Thanksgiving how after dinner everyone was sleepy? Well there’s a reason for that: turkey makes you sleepy. Turkey contains Tryptophan, which promotes melatonin production in the body. Melatonin is the hormone that makes you sleepy when it’s time to sleep.

A Glass of Milk

Milk also contains tryptophan, not to mention that a nice warm glass of milk is a super comforting snack before bed. Try adding some honey or turmeric for extra comfort and to help settle your stomach if you like.

Almonds and Other Nuts

Almonds, rather than promoting melatonin production, already have melatonin in them. This can help make you sleepy. In addition they are a great source of magnesium, which has been shown to help sleep by reducing inflammation and stress. Many other nuts also have melatonin and magnesium as well, so if you don’t prefer almonds try another kind.
