If you want to make your own burritos at home, look no further than this DIY Burrito Bar recipe! Perfect for a fun family dinner or a casual gathering with friends, this interactive meal allows everyone to build their own burritos just the way they like them. Here’s how to make them.

Ingredients:

  • Flour tortillas (large, burrito-sized)
  • Cooked protein of your choice (such as grilled chicken, seasoned beef, or sautéed shrimp)
  • Beans (black beans, pinto beans, or refried beans)
  • Rice (white or brown rice, seasoned with lime and cilantro)
  • Assorted toppings: shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, sliced avocado, chopped onions, diced bell peppers, shredded cheese, salsa, sour cream, guacamole, hot sauce

Optional extras:

  • Chopped cilantro
  • Lime wedges
  • Jalapeño slices

Instructions:

  1. Prepare all your ingredients and set them out in separate bowls or plates, creating a DIY burrito bar station where everyone can easily access them. Warm the flour tortillas in a dry skillet or microwave for a few seconds until they are pliable and heated through.
  2. Start assembling your burrito by adding a spoonful of rice to the center of each tortilla, followed by your choice of protein and beans. Next, layer on your desired toppings and extras, being careful not to overfill the burrito.
  3. To wrap the burrito, fold the sides of the tortilla over the filling, then fold the bottom edge up and over the filling, tucking it in tightly. Continue rolling the burrito until it forms a tight cylinder. Repeat the process with the remaining tortillas and fillings, creating a variety of customized burritos to suit everyone’s tastes.
  4. Serve the burritos with extra toppings and sauces on the side, allowing everyone to add their preferred finishing touches. Enjoy your homemade burritos straight away, or wrap them in foil and place them in a warm oven to keep them hot until ready to serve.

In a world where dining out is a luxury, why not bring the gourmet experience to your own kitchen? Welcome to the world of DIY gourmet, where home cooks transform their kitchens into fancy culinary playgrounds. No need for reservations—just an apron and a pinch of creativity.

Elevate Your Tools

Trade your regular kitchen gear for a few culinary must-haves. A quality chef’s knife, a reliable meat thermometer, and a precision mandoline are the keys to the limousine that is restaurant-style perfection. These tools are your loyal allies in top-notch slicing and dicing.

Ingredients Matter

No more playing it safe. It’s time to step into the world of exotic spices and specialty flours. Equip your pantry with things like truffle oil, saffron threads, or black garlic. You may think these ingredients are just for show, but they’re actually what turns dishes from good to magnificent.

Technique is Key

Ever wondered how chefs get that perfect sear or create delicate layers in a dessert? It’s all about technique. Master the art of sous vide cooking, practice the perfect emulsion, and embrace the nuances of molecular gastronomy. These techniques may sound fancy, but with a bit of practice, you’ll get the hang of them.

Food processors are a godsend when it comes to food preparation, taking the grunt work out of shredding and making kneading a breeze. While they’re most often used to make smooth recipes like dips and sauces, the mechanics of food processors make them an ideal tool for much more than just hummus. In fact, with a pinch of creativity and a dash of salt, there’s practically no limit to the ways food processors can be used to prepare all kinds of delicious recipes. Here are a few of our favorite non-traditional ways to use this essential kitchen appliance.

Brown Sugar

If ever you find yourself baking, only to discover mid-recipe that you’re out of brown sugar, know that you can easily whip some up in your food processor using just two ingredients. Add one cup of granulated white sugar and two tablespoons of molasses to the bowl of your food processor and pulse until the molasses incorporates evenly. Voilà—rich, moist, flavorful brown sugar in no time.

Herb Salt

We love cooking with herbs, but fresh herbs often come in quite large quantities, and it can be a challenge to use them all before they go bad. One of our favorite ways to get more out of the herbs we buy is to create our own salt blends. Place any leftover herbs in a dehydrator or oven on low heat until they crumble easily, then pulse in a food processor with ½ cup of coarse sea salt. Use it to flavor all kinds of dishes such as pasta and roasted vegetables, or fill glass jars with your salt to give as homemade gifts.

Whipped Cream

Skip the store-bought stuff—making your own whipped cream is a cinch when you’ve got a food processor, and the results taste so much better. Add one cup of chilled coconut or heavy cream to your food processor bowl and pulse a few times. Once the liquid no longer splashes, blend for 30 seconds to a minute until you’ve reached your desired consistency. Add a teaspoon of vanilla and your choice of sweetener to taste, incorporating with a final pulse.

Making nut butter at home doesn’t require complicated ingredients, just some carefully selected tools and a lot of patience. The process of making almond butter is similar to making other kinds of nut butter, but it may require a bit of extra carefulness in order to achieve the perfect result.

Almonds First, Please

You can use either raw or roasted almonds. This depends on your personal preference, as the option you choose will determine the flavor of your butter. When it comes to ingredients, you don’t need anything besides almonds, not even oil.

How It’s Done

Almond butter comes with more vitamins, minerals, and fiber than peanut butter, which is why it recently became very popular. However, it’s more expensive than peanut butter and it’s not necessary to pay the extra cash when you can make it yourself.

The process of making it is pretty straightforward. It requires you to have a food processor and a desired amount of almonds for making the butter. Simply add the almonds to the food processor bowl (use the “S” blade) and start processing them. Don’t add too much at once!

Patience and Focus

This is where you need to be patient. It will take a while and you’ll have to stop the food processor several times and scrape down its sides before continuing the blending. After 10-15 minutes, you’ll notice the change in texture as the oil starts to separate.

After 20 minutes of constant blending, you may expect to see that the contents of your food processor bowl have finally turned into butter, but it’s probably still grainy. If you want it to be smoother, keep blending for a few more minutes.

When you think about a dipping sauce for chicken, french fries, or any other dippable food, what do you reach for in your kitchen? While pre-made or simple sauces such as regular ketchup or ranch dressing are usually the preferred choices for many, the reality is that it isn’t hard to get creative at home!

Here are a few delicious dipping sauce ideas that aren’t difficult to make in your own kitchen.

Curry Ketchup

Adding curry powder, along with a little bit of honey and chili powder, to ketchup results in a sauce that is hugely popular in European countries such as Germany. You can use curry ketchup on hot dogs or to dip your french fries in.

Garlic Mayonnaise

Garlic mayonnaise is so great as a dipping sauce for chicken tenders and as a topping for hamburgers. You can make it by adding pressed garlic cloves along with a touch of lemon juice, stirring, and then leaving to chill.

Honey Mustard

Honey mustard is a classic dipping sauce which many people don’t realize is actually quite simple to make in your own kitchen. Combining honey with dijon mustard (along with a little bit of mayonnaise if you want to improve its texture) results in this long-time favorite.

Everyone knows that packing your own lunch to have at work saves you money. But it also helps ensure that you eat something wholesome during the day, rather than just what’s around your workplace. Making yummy lunches every day is challenging and can get repetitive so read on for some ideas to spice up your lunches!

Hearty Sandwiches

This is definitely a classic lunch option. They are also easy to mix up, change, and make healthy. Load your sandwich up with veggies, lean proteins, beans, and other yummy foods. Also, opt for wraps or whole wheat bread. You can change the content of the sandwich daily to give yourself something more exciting to eat.

Wholesome Salads

Salads are an easy, healthy choice. However, the trouble with taking a salad for lunch is that it may not fill you up all through the afternoon. You can change this by layering the salad with healthy things that add weight such as tuna, protein-rich chicken, beans, and quinoa.

Soup

Soup is definitely the more comforting choice and very cold weather appropriate. When you don’t want to have a bulky lunch, settle for a light puréed veggie soup.

If you can’t always eat out, shop for these kitchen staples.

Thinking about how much you spend at the grocery store each week? Sometimes it feels like the cashier must have made a mistake. While there are a few ways to save money at checkout, purchasing the raw ingredients to make your favorite dishes can go far and above your financial goals, even on a small scale. These food basics can go a long way towards meal planning and major savings.

Do Your Own Prep

Cut a whole carrot into sticks for a snack, and use the shavings on a salad or wrap instead of buying them packaged shredded. You’ll get a more robust taste and possibly dollars off your total at the register.

Sliced mushrooms are great with things like pasta, omelets and hamburger but they can wilt and go bad in the fridge pretty quickly. Buy a whole mushroom and slice it yourself when ready to cook to make it last.

There’s so much you can do with potatoes, and they’re cheap if you buy them before they’ve been prepped. Want homemade hash browns for breakfast? Don’t let the convenience factor sway you in the freezer aisle — shred some russets and throw them on a skillet in some oil (best of all, you can adjust the salt and oil content, for your health).

Bagged ceasar salad is nothing compared to one you prepared yourself with fresh romaine lettuce, which you can buy for a fraction of the cost.

Cheap Foods That Pack Major Nutritional Punch

Shredded cabbage is a great source of fiber and vitamin B1, and at home in a variety of dishes including dumplings, stir fry and cassarole. The fresher, the sweeter, and you won’t pay nearly as much.

Rice, which can be used to complement a wide variety of meals, costs pennies when bought in bulk compared to the boxes with serving sizes. Worried you might mess it up on the stove? Invest in a simple rice cooker and get peace of mind.

Saving on your weekly grocery budget is as simple as taking some extra time to cut up your own veggies and fruits. Get out there and save!

Almond butter comes with more vitamins, minerals, and fiber than peanut butter, which is why it recently became very popular. However, it’s more expensive than peanut butter and it’s not necessary to pay the extra cash when you can make it yourself.
