Tootsie Roll, the iconic chocolate-flavored taffy, has been enjoyed by kids and adults across the United States since 1907. With qualities reminiscent of both caramels and taffy, this sweet treat was actually the first ‘penny candy’ to come individually wrapped in America.

Tootsie Roll Industries stands tall as one of the globe’s largest candy manufacturers, making over 65 million Tootsie Rolls daily. According to them, the secret is a recipe that includes a bit of the previous day’s batch, which is a tradition dating back to the candy’s inception.

Early Beginning

The story begins with founder Leo Hirschfield, a Jewish-Austrian immigrant, the descendant of a family of candy makers, who started his candy career in a small New York City shop in 1896. After dabbling in jelly powders, he perfected the Tootsie Roll in 1907, naming it after his daughter Clara, aka “Tootsie”. The first rolls hit the market in September 1908.

Later Incarnation

Though Hirschfield’s journey ended tragically in 1922, his legacy endured. In 1935, Joseph Rubin & Sons rescued the company from financial woes, with Bernard Rubin appointed as its president. He revamped the formula and size, propelling sales twelvefold by the time of his passing in 1948.

Today

Ellen Rubin Gordon, daughter of William B. Rubin (Bernard’s brother), took over in 2015 and has been steering the ship since. Today, she serves as chairman and CEO, proudly continuing the Tootsie Roll legacy.

But enough history—let’s talk flavor. Alongside the classic cocoa, Tootsie Roll offers a rainbow of fruity options like cherry, orange, vanilla, lemon, and lime in their Tootsie Fruit Chews.

So, next time you’re craving a sweet pick-me-up, grab your Tootsie Roll of choice and savor a piece of sweet history.

Easter is just around the corner, and one tradition we’re seriously looking forward to is digging into a package of Peeps. These iconic marshmallow treats have been a staple of Easter baskets for decades, and for good reason- they’re sweet, colorful, and undeniably cute. As marshmallows, Peeps have been around since the 1960s, but in recent years, several well-known companies have partnered with the brand to create Peeps-flavored versions of some popular products. Check them out if looking for something new and fun to try this Easter.

PEPSI X PEEPS

Try saying “Peeps Pepsi” five times fast. Whether or not you’re successful, you’re sure to enjoy this vanilla marshmallow-flavored cola. Pepsi’s usual red and blue branding is replaced with bright yellow on its Peeps cans and bottles, so they’ll fit right in as part of any Easter basket.

Oreo Peeps

Oreo has developed a bit of a reputation for its weird and wacky flavors in recent years, but its Peeps variety is a delicious treat for Easter snacking. The cookies are made with a pink marshmallow-flavored filling with a subtle granulated sugar texture reminiscent of traditional Peeps.

Kellogg’s Peeps Cereal

If Froot Loops and Lucky Charms had a vanilla marshmallow-flavored baby, it would be this cereal. It contains a mix of crunchy O’s and bunny and chick shaped marshmallows in fun pastel colors perfect for Spring.

Halloween is just around the corner, and for many of us, that means both giving and eating lots of Halloween candy. While we love the classics like Snickers, Twix, and M&Ms, food allergies are on the rise among children in many parts of the world, and one of the most common culprits to be aware of is dairy.

Candies like these are made with milk chocolate, meaning that many of the potential trick-or-treaters you may receive will be unable to enjoy what you have to offer. Fortunately, there are some popular candies available that are coincidentally free of common allergens as well as products specifically made for those with dietary restrictions.

Skittles

Luckily, one of the most popular candies on the market just so happens to be free of the top 8 most common allergens. The company that manufactures Skittles also takes great care to make sure no cross-contamination occurs during production, so these are a pretty safe option.

Enjoy Life Halloween Chocolate Minis

Enjoy Life makes some of our favorite allergy-friendly and vegan baking chocolates, so we were psyched when we discovered that they’d entered the Halloween Candy market. They offer packages of individually-wrapped chocolates in 3 flavors that are perfect for giving any trick-or-treaters with food allergies.

Sour Patch Kids

Another old favorite, Sour Patch Kids are a fun and tasty option that also happens to be free of the top 8 most common food allergens as well as sesame. For even more fun, try adding packets of Sour Patch Watermelons to your candy bowl so that trick-or-treaters can choose their favorite.

M&M’s newest flavor is here to provide the coffee fix we need. Who needs to order a caramel cold brew when M&M’s can provide all that and chocolate?

M&M’S Caramel Cold Brew has been described as “a delicious combination of smooth, robust coffee flavor and sweet, chewy caramel, covered in classic M&M’S milk chocolate and wrapped in a colorful, candy shell.” It will follow the chocolate company’s limited-edition Espresso flavor for the holiday season but will become M&M’s first permanent coffee-flavored product.

“More and more coffee drinkers are exploring new flavor combinations, with cold brew ranking as one of Gen Z’s most purchased drinks,” explained Allison Miazga-Bedrick, Senior Marketing Director at Mars Wrigley. “Mars’ M&M’s brand decided to tap into the booming cold brew coffee scene and pair it with a confectionary favorite — caramel. The result? A fun twist to an on-trend favorite that delivers an exceptional coffee flavor experience, all within a classic bag of M&M’S — perfect to enjoy on the go while catching up with friends or sharing a taste of the M&M’S Caramel Cold Brew candies to make new ones.“

The new flavor will be in stores from February 2023, so if eating M&Ms for breakfast is your guilty pleasure, at least now you can get your coffee, too!

October only just started, but we’re already excited for Halloween. After all, who doesn’t love an excuse to dress up and eat candy?! Sweets have become as much a part of Halloween tradition as the ghouls and gore, with some proving more popular than others. Using Google Trends, job-hunting site Zippia has discovered America’s favorite candy, and the results may surprise you.

The Ultimate

With their chewy texture and fruity flavor, Starbursts are naturally a win. Last year, the square candy was chosen as the most popular, but this year the chews were dethroned by Kit Kats. The chocolate wafers were named the favorite by 6 states, more than any other candy.

Candy vs Chocolate

Far be it from us to choose between chocolate and candy, but such things must be done to determine the true winner. 22 states chose a gummy or fruit chew as their top choice, while 28 went in favor of chocolate.

We’re Worried About Some States

Not that we’re judging, but… Tennessee likes Runts best, Oklahoma chose Circus Peanuts, West Virginia prefers Candy Corn, and Colorado has a penchant for black licorice. Thankfully, some states are normal like New York, Virginia, and Ohio which went for Reese’s.

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, with this year’s annual celebration of love taking place on Friday, February 14th. Couples from around the world will give gifts and spend time together on this special day.

Is your partner a foodie? If so, one of the best treats that you can gift them is chocolate-covered snacks. Here are three to have in mind when making this year’s Valentine’s Day purchases.

Chocolate-Covered Strawberries

Chocolate-covered strawberries are a classic Valentine’s Day treat, and they should definitely be on your list for this year’s festivities. We especially like dark chocolate-covered strawberries, whose slightly bitter quality lets the tartness and sweetness of the strawberry be the protagonist of the snack.

Chocolate-Covered Almonds

Did you know that National Almond Day is celebrated the week after Valentine’s Day? Get two things done in one fell swoop and gift your lover chocolate-covered almonds for the holiday! They are sure to love their delectable, sweet flavor.

Chocolate-Covered Cherries

If you are looking for an alternative chocolate-covered fruit to strawberries, cherries are a great option for Valentine’s Day. Possessing many of the same qualities as strawberries, namely sweetness and tartness, these fruits are a great option to be dipped in chocolate.

You know how you can’t resist a bag of crunchy chips you’ve hidden from yourself in the pantry? And how about all those incredibly tasty candy bars that you just love? How can something so tasty be bad for you? There’s a reason why junk food is addictive and it’s definitely not because it contains something our bodies need.

Junk food is engineered to be the most delicious food you can eat. Every piece of junk food, whether it’s a fast-food burger, a can of soda, a salty snack, a candy bar, or a donut, contains perfectly proportioned ingredients like fat (usually saturated), sugar, and salt, a combination your brain loves. The tricky thing with junk food is that the more you eat it, the more you crave it. Eating these foods that were designed to hit all the right spots in your brain makes you want more of them, and once you get going, it can be difficult to stop.

You can learn a bit more about junk food in the video below.
