Savory pies featuring cheese, vegetables, or meat are cuisine staples in many European countries. This is especially the case with Eastern Europe, Balkan countries, and Turkey, where such pies became cult dishes and part of the culture.

The reason why these pies are so popular in these parts of the world has to do with the fact that they are a perfect combination of pastry and filling. Each bite gives you an unexpected first crunch but then proceeds to melt in your mouth. But the best thing of all is that savory pies are super quick and super simple to make. You need just a few ingredients that you probably already have laying around, and you’re good to go. If you’re interested in making one, check out the recipe below.

Ingredients

  • 1 package phyllo dough (should have around 15 to 20 sheets)
  • 2 cups cottage cheese
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 3 eggs
  • salt
  • olive oil

Instructions

1. Combine cheese, sour cream, and eggs into a bowl. Mix until all ingredients are finely combined. Add salt to taste.

2. Brush a baking tray with olive oil. Put two sheets of phyllo dough aside. Take another two phyllo dough sheets and brush with olive oil again. Cover with a thin layer of cheese and sour cream spread.

3. Stack two more phyllo dough sheets, brush with olive oil, and apply the spread. Continue the process until you’ve run out of spread or sheets.

4. Cover the layers with two phyllo dough sheets you’ve set aside at the beginning, and then brush them with olive oil. Pop into a preheated oven and bake on 350F for 45 minutes.

5. Cut in the desired shape and dig in!
