Hot dogs are one of America’s quintessential foods. Although it originated in Germany, hot dogs became popular as a working class street food in the United States thanks to the appearance of stands and cards.

But aside from the ketchup, mustard, and relish, a hot dog is really just a sausage between a bun. In that case, does it qualify as a sandwich?

The question has hung in the air for years, with people having a difference of opinion. And still the debate rages on.

It can be argued that New York is the American state which loves hot dogs the most. And so, a true New Yorker was asked to share her thoughts.

During an appearance on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Padma Lakshmi, who spent her childhood in NYC, was asked the all-important query: is a hotdog a sandwich?

“I mean, it’s a poor excuse for a sandwich, but it’s technically a sandwich,” the host of Top Chef: World All-Stars replied.

Sadly, the audience didn’t seem to agree as Lakshmi’s answer elicited boos. That said, the cookbook author is in good company as even Oscar Mayer, which produces frankfurters, has declared that a hotdog constitutes a sandwich.
