Banana pudding is a classic Southern dessert. It’s creamy, comforting, and best made at home. Here’s how to create this heavenly dessert from scratch.
Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
- A pinch of salt
- 4 large eggs, separated
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 45 vanilla wafers
- 5 ripe bananas, sliced
Instructions
- In a large saucepan, combine 1/2 cup sugar, flour, and salt over medium heat. In a bowl, beat the egg yolks well and gradually stir them into the dry ingredients in the saucepan. Gradually add milk, stirring constantly until well mixed.
- Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring continuously, until it thickens and comes to a boil. Then, reduce the heat and let it simmer for another minute before removing it from the stove. Stir in vanilla extract. This is your custard base.
- Next, select a large, clear serving bowl. Start by placing a layer of vanilla wafers at the bottom. Add a layer of banana slices over the wafers. Pour a portion of the custard over the bananas, spreading evenly.
- Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a custard layer on top.
- Chill for about 4 hours and enjoy!
