How to Make the Most Delicious Banana Pudding

Banana pudding is a classic Southern dessert. It’s creamy, comforting, and best made at home. Here’s how to create this heavenly dessert from scratch.

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • A pinch of salt
  • 4 large eggs, separated
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 45 vanilla wafers
  • 5 ripe bananas, sliced

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, combine 1/2 cup sugar, flour, and salt over medium heat. In a bowl, beat the egg yolks well and gradually stir them into the dry ingredients in the saucepan. Gradually add milk, stirring constantly until well mixed.
  2. Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring continuously, until it thickens and comes to a boil. Then, reduce the heat and let it simmer for another minute before removing it from the stove. Stir in vanilla extract. This is your custard base.
  3. Next, select a large, clear serving bowl. Start by placing a layer of vanilla wafers at the bottom. Add a layer of banana slices over the wafers. Pour a portion of the custard over the bananas, spreading evenly.
  4. Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a custard layer on top. 
  5. Chill for about 4 hours and enjoy!
