Red onion jam is simple to make and opens many culinary doors. You can make it in under 45 minutes and get really creative with how you use it in your dishes. Once you have the procedure under your belt, you’ll be able to use this savory jam whenever you like in plenty of exciting combinations. Here’s what you need to know.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ounce butter
  • 2 red onions
  • 1 ounce sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar
  • salt and pepper.

Instructions:

  1. Chop the onions into very fine slices. The thinner they are, the easier they boil later on.
  2. Heat a saucepan on medium heat.
  3. Melt the butter in the pan along with the sugar and the balsamic vinegar. If you like you can add a dash of cassis. This is a blackcurrant liqueur that gives the jam a little extra kick.
  4. When it has all melted into a sauce, season with salt and pepper.
  5. Next, slide the onions into the mix and bring to the boil.
  6. Cook the onions in the sauce for about 30 minutes on a low heat. You want it to just simmer. Once it has stewed for that length of time, it will be ready.
  7. Just leave to cool first.
