Caramelized onions are a great addition to many dishes. The sweet and savory flavor is absolute perfection. But sometimes, it can be hard to achieve that perfect taste and texture without burning or, on the other side, undercooking the unions. Here’s a step-by-step process to help you out.

Selecting the Right Onions

While all onions can be caramelized, yellow onions are usually the best. They contain less water and a higher sugar content, making them ideal for achieving that desired caramelized result.

Preparation Matters

To start the caramelization process, proper preparation is key. Peel and thinly slice the onions uniformly to ensure even cooking.

Don’t Rush

Caramelizing onions is a slow and gentle process. Heat a heavy-bottomed pan or skillet over medium-low heat. Add a generous amount of cooking fat, such as butter, olive oil, or a combination of both. Spread the onions evenly across the pan. Allow them to cook undisturbed for several minutes.

Low and Slow Cooking

Stir the onions occasionally but be patient. Caramelizing onions properly can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Once the onions have a deep golden brown color and a soft, melting texture you know you’re done. Enjoy the sweet and slightly nutty flavor of your dish of choice.
