Here’s the Deal on Removing Olive Pits

Fans of How I Met Your Mother may recall the “olive theory”. According to the philosophy, in a relationship there should be one person who dislikes olives and one who adores them. We’re definitely the latter! But if there’s one thing that’s always been a point of contention, it’s how to remove their pits in public… If you’re plagued by the same problem, read on.

In and Out

The rules of etiquette state that an olive pit should come out the same way the olive went in. As such, if you put the olive in your mouth on a fork, the pit should be removed via the fork, too.

To the Side

Some uber fancy places may provide a pit bowl to discard the little stones, but if there isn’t one in site, don’t stress. It’s perfectly fine to place the pit on the side of your plate.

Napkins for the Win

A disposable napkin is your best friend when it comes to olives. Use them to discreetly remove (and store) the pit from your mouth.

No to Gnawing

Sadly, gnawing an olive in public is a huge faux pas. It is considered poor etiquette to visibly gnaw or nibble around a pit.
