It’s easy to overload on processed sugar in the summer when we’re desperate for some cooling ice cream or artificially flavored popsicles. Unfortunately, too much of that with no nutrients can make us feel sick, so it helps to have some healthier alternatives. Most fruits can be chopped up and frozen for a nice cool treat, but some are better than others. Here are the best for freezing.

Banana

The biggest benefit of a frozen banana is that it is shaped just like a popsicle, so you can easily hold and eat it with one hand. Since it’s fruit instead of frozen water, it’ll last longer and it won’t melt! Be sure to peel the bananas before you put them in the freezer, and wrap them individually in plastic wrap so you can just grab, unwrap, and go.

Sweet Potato

Okay, this is technically a vegetable, but it works just as well! Taiwanese TikToker George Lee recently shared how they beat the heat over in Taiwan: frozen sweet potatoes. Simply cook the sweet potato until the skin is puffed out, let it cool and freeze it, and enjoy! The result is custardy, soft, and sweet–the perfect healthy frozen treat.

Strawberries

Strawberries are the perfect size to make little bombs of frozen sweetness. Just cut off the stems and freeze in a ziplock bag, then pop one in your mouth when you need to cool down. They’re big enough that one will be satisfying, but small enough to still be bite-sized.
