Whether you’re looking to cook up a hearty meatloaf or some crispy Southern fried chicken, bread crumbs are a versatile ingredient that will come in handy for a range of recipes. But what happens if you’re looking for gluten-free options or when you realize that you don’t have any in stock? Here are some easy, effective substitutes for bread crumbs that will leave you unable to tell the difference.

Rolled Oats

If you’re looking for nutrition, then rolled oats are a perfect alternative. Richer in fiber than regular bread crumbs, the one area where oats lack is flavor, however, this can be fixed by tossing them in a blender with some of your favorite seasoning.

Corn Flakes

Given its texture and moderate flavoring, cornflakes are an ideal breadcrumb substitute. To add some extra flavor, mix them with butter or oil before blending into a fine powder.

Pretzels

Much like potato chips, pretzels bring a salty flavor to any dish, meaning that you won’t need to coat them in any additional seasoning. Still, they may be best used as a coating instead of the main ingredient given their dominant taste.
