Many of us can’t imagine starting our day without a cup of coffee, but according to a renowned chef, we might have to start…

Sam Kass’s career involves being the personal chef to the Obamas. So, it’s safe to say that he knows a thing or two about food.

In the years since, Kass has turned his attention to sustainable agriculture and launched a food technology company called TROVE that focuses on the relationship between the climate, planet, and food. He has expressed his belief that crops like coffee beans may not be around in the not-too-distant future…

“A number of foods that we hold very dear to our hearts and largely take for granted are under a real threat,” Kass told PEOPLE. “And you’re seeing in the future, we’re on track for a lot of those to become quite scarce and some really to be largely unavailable to most people and others just significantly increased in cost.”

Kass specifically stated that items like wine, chocolate, coffee, shellfish, and rice are likely to be largely unavailable in 30 years’ time.

It may sound pessimistic, but science has backed up Kass’s claims. A recent report by the Institute of Natural Resource Sciences at Zurich University of Applied Sciences stated that “coffee proved to be most vulnerable to climate change with negative impacts dominating all growing regions, primarily due to increasing temperatures.”
