German cuisine is known for a lot of things, but if there’s one thing that German food is known best for around the world, it’s their sausages. There are countless different kinds of German sausages, and if you’re not familiar with them, it can seem a bit confusing. Bratwurst
The Bratwurst is what most people first think of when they hear “German sausage”. Made from a mixture of minced beef and pork, it is sold around Germany as fast food as well as in higher-end restaurants and food stands around the world.
Frankfurter
Another famous export, Frankfurters are now enjoyed all around the world. They are made from minced veal and pork that is seasoned with salt, pepper, and a hint of paprika. They’re often boiled and served with mustard.
Nürnberger Rostbratwurst
Often served around six to eight at a time, these are little sausages that resemble what you might call “cocktail sausages”. They are often eaten for breakfast, or served with sauerkraut, potatoes, and horseradish.
Knackwurst
Originating in Northern Germany, this sausage is made from minced beef and seasoned with garlic. It’s commonly served with potatoes and sauerkraut.
