Why make brownie mix from scratch when there are so many amazing boxed mixes to choose from? And you can make them even better by adding mix-ins and swapping ingredients, giving them the taste of homemade brownies. We won’t tell anyone your brownies aren’t homemade if you don’t! Check out these five ways to make box mixes even more delicious.

Replace Oil with Butter

Most boxed mixes call for vegetable oil, which gives brownies a lighter texture. But instead, substitute oil with butter, which will give the brownies a rich flavor and texture.

Replace Water with Creamers, Coffee, or Milk

Instead of using water, replace it with milk or flavored coffee creamers for a more flavorful brownie. Coffee also works well by bringing out the dark chocolate flavor of the brownies.

Add Mix-Ins

Cookies, candies, peanut butter, Nutella, marshmallow fluff, caramel sauce, and nuts make for delicious mix-ins. They’re a nice surprise in each bite.

Slightly Underbake

For a richer flavor, take brownies out of the oven four to five minutes earlier than they call for. The brownies will be super gooey and they’ll melt in your mouth.

Add Toppings

Instead of mixing in candies, cookies, nuts, and sauces, add them as toppings or when the brownies come out of the oven. Sea salt and chocolate chips are also great additions.
