Cookies that spread in the oven is a common baking problem that we’ve all faced at least once in life. There are a few things that can ruin your cookies and cause them to spread in the oven, so here are a few ways to prevent this scenario.

Chill The Dough

There’s a good reason why most cookie recipes instruct you to chill the dough before baking, so don’t ever skip this step. Warm cookie dough will most certainly spread in the oven, which is why it’s necessary to refrigerate it for at least two hours.

Too Much Liquid Ingredients

The key to making perfect cookie dough is to measure all the ingredients correctly is, preferably using a kitchen scale. Adding too much liquid ingredients like sugar, eggs, milk is one of the things that can cause the cookies to spread.

Oven Temperature

Cookies can also spread if the oven isn’t hot enough, so make sure to always check the temperature before baking and you can do that by using an oven thermometer.

Hot Baking Sheet

Last but not least, avoid placing cookie dough onto a hot baking sheet when baking more than one batch because the heat can also cause them to spread.
