After taking Asia by storm, bubble tea is experiencing a global boom, but should you hop on this trend right away? Black or green tea is often used as its base, which led to a common misconception this beverage is pretty healthy, but there are a few things worth keeping in mind if you’re drinking it on a regular basis.

High Sugar Content

One of the biggest issues with this popular drink is its high sugar content. Even though bubble tea ingredients can vary, many recipes call for sweetened milk, flavored syrups, and sugary fruit blends, and you’ll especially struggle to avoid excessive sugar if you’re buying commercial blends instead of making your own.

Unhealthy Fats

In addition to increasing your sugar intake, bubble tea can also have a high fat content because it contains such ingredients as dairy milk and creamers packed with palm oil.

High-Calorie Content

The calorie content of this drink is also surprisingly high, and that’s not a coincidence. This drink wouldn’t be the same without tapioca pearls aka boba, made from tapioca starch. They can taste pretty good and add to your tea’s unique texture, but they’re mainly composed of carbohydrates and can significantly increase the calorie count of your drink.
