If clean-up time happens to be your least favorite part of cooking, the dishwasher is probably your favorite kitchen tool. Unfortunately, certain types of dishes don’t belong anywhere near it, and here are three reasons why knives fall under that category.

Damaging Knives

If you want your knives to last as long as possible, clean them up as soon as possible instead of letting the dishwasher do it for you. The blade and handle will rust more quickly if you have the habit of soaking your knives in water, and strong detergents may dull their edges.

Damaging Dishwasher

In addition to causing damage to your knives, cleaning them up in a dishwasher might not be so good for this machine itself. Knives could possibly damage the coating on the dishwashing racks, and cause them to rust faster than they would otherwise.

Safety Concerns

Washing knives in the dishwasher is best avoided for safety reasons, especially if you’re not the only one using this kitchen tool. Sharp objects in the dishwasher are a huge safety hazard because the person unloading the dishwasher might grab them from the wrong end.
