What to Eat Before a Performance

If you ever go up on stage, whether in a choir, theater, or as a speaker, it’s important to properly prepare so your body and mind will be in top shape. One important part of prepping is having a good diet. So, here’s what to eat (and what to avoid) on the day you have a performance!

Avoid Caffeine

Presumably, you’ve already got some pre-curtain jitters, and caffeine can make those much worse by raising your blood pressure and inducing anxiety-ridden brain chemical production. Additionally, if you’ll be using your voice, caffeine can dry your throat. Instead, opt for tea with lots of honey, and drink fluids throughout the day so you’re hydrated at the big moment.

Don’t Skip the Carbs

It’s important to eat healthy carbs before your performance because you’ll need lots of energy—and energy comes from carbs! It’s okay to eat light throughout the day, but don’t eat too light or you may find yourself getting tired up onstage. Eat a nice hearty but clean meal a couple hours before your performance, such as a serving of pasta with veggies and protein or a nice filling sandwich.

Right Before

If you find yourself feeling peckish in the last moments before your appearance, that’s okay. Keep some unsalted nuts or fruit backstage to snack on for an extra little boost that won’t weigh you down.
