In the last few years, more and more vegan ice creams have been hitting the shelves. They’re becoming almost as numerous as their traditional dairy counterparts, but what exactly are they made from? Here’s what you need to know about vegan ice cream if you’re thinking about having some.

Non-Dairy Milk

In the same way that traditional ice cream is made from milk and cream, vegan ice cream is made from basically any non-dairy milk. This means that you can make vegan ice cream from almond milk, oat milk, or soy milk. Each of these plant-based milks gives a slightly different taste. And each of us will have our favorites.

The sweetest is often said to be almond milk. But every vegan will have their own preference and will probably mix up their ice cream so that they get a bit of all the different plant-based milks.

Popular U.S. Brands

Some of the most popular vegan ice cream names in the U.S. are Ben & Jerry’s, Brave Robot, Oatley, and Trader Joe’s who make soy-based cream. Luna and Larry’s makes coconut milk ice cream which is a popular flavor, while Forrager makes a cashew milk-based ice cream.
