Try Making the Great Depression Water Pie

Who would’ve thought that we’ll be in a situation like this in the 21st century? Depending on where you live, you may be obligated to stay at home for days straight or unable to go anywhere but to the store — where there are always long lines. What can you do if you’re craving something sweet and don’t have anything at home? You can try making water pie using this recipe that dates back to the Great Depression.

Ingredients

  • 1 pie crust
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 4 tbsp flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 5 tbsp butter

Instructions:

  1. Before you start, turn on the oven to 400F. Start by putting the pie crust on a baking sheet.
  2. Pour the prepared water into the crust.
  3. Mix flour and sugar in a bowl and sprinkle over water without stirring.
  4. Sprinkle vanilla over it.
  5. Place the pieces of butter on top of everything and put the pie in the preheated oven.
  6. Bake for half an hour, then reduce the heat to 375F and bake for another half hour.
  7. Leave the pie to cool down and allow the water to turn into a gel. Don’t cut it until it’s completely chilled in the fridge.
