We don’t blame you if you think freezing potatoes is unnecessary. After all, keep the potatoes in the dark and cold place, and they’ll be fine for months. But if you really want the potatoes to be at the top of their game even after a while, you’ll want to freeze them.

Now, freezing potatoes isn’t exactly as simple as you might think. Simply dumping a sack of potatoes in the freezer won’t do due to their high water percentage. So you’ll have to use a different method.

According to The Kitchn, the best way of freezing potatoes is to cut them and cook them. This way, the freezing will help trap the flavor, and you’ll have them ready for any type of potato dish you might think of.

The first thing you want to do is to get the best and freshest potatoes. Then wash them and cut them in the way you prefer. That can be cubes, slices, stripes, or anything else.

After cutting, dump the potatoes in a pot of unsalted boiling water and cook for around five minutes. The exact cooking time will depend on the size of your cuts. The general rule is that the potatoes are cooked once they are tender enough for the fork to pierce them easily.

Boiled potatoes should then be thrown into a bath of ice so the cooking process stops. After that, pat the potatoes dry and line them on a baking sheet, and pop them in the freezer overnight.

In the morning, take the frozen potatoes and place them in a Ziploc bag. Store the bag in the freezer and take it out whenever you are in the mood for potatoes.
