A visit to Vienna is never complete without tasting a slice of their famous Sachertorte. While this famous cake is available all around the world, Vienna is the only place where it’s made using the original recipe that’s jealously kept from copying. Here’s a bit more about the dessert and where you can eat the original Sachertorte.

Baked for a Prince

The cake was created by a young Austrian chef named Franz Sacher in 1832. Sacher, who was 16 at the time, was asked by a wealthy heir, Prince Klemens von Metternich, to create a special dessert. Sacher loved chocolate, so he made it the base of his cake and it was a huge success. The original recipe is still protected by a trademark but bakers around the world have tried recreating its unique taste and texture.

If you want to be sure you’re tasting the 100% authentic Sachertorte, visit the Hotel Sacher in Vienna. The hotel serves more than 270,000 pieces of cake every year and offers online purchases as well.

There are a few more places that serve the original cake with trademark: Hotel Sacher in Salzburg, Sacher Café in Graz and Innsbruck, and the airport shop in Vienna. Outside of Austria, there’s only one place where you can get authentic Sachertorte: Sacher Shop in Bolzano, Italy.
