The 3 Most Common Mistakes When Making Pie

The colder weather inspires us to spend more time in the kitchen, coming up with delicious treats, sweet and savory. One fall staple is pie, a versatile dish that you can make with any ingredients you like. If you don’t want to risk being disappointed with your pie, here are three mistakes to avoid.

Don’t Skip the Acid

Acids, such as buttermilk and a little bit of vinegar, are important ingredients that will help your dough stay just the way you like it. The dough is easy to overwork, and acids help if you use them.

Too Much Liquid

When you add too much liquid, your dough may be easier to roll, but it will be harder in the end. Aim for dough that barely holds together and always remember that you can add liquid if required, but you can’t take it out.

Not Pre-Cook Filling

Certain pies require that you pre-cook the filling, such as apple pie. If you don’t do this you may end up with crunchy apples, liquidy or overly sweet pie, or some other unpleasant surprise.
