As we move into September and summer comes to a close, many of us are in need of a little break from all of the barbecues, nights out with friends, and family gatherings where we may have drank just a little too much. While there’s nothing wrong with having a drink once in a while, months of consuming alcohol consistently can leave you feeling a bit less than your best. Luckily, taking a break from booze doesn’t have to be boring. There are plenty of non-alcoholic versions of classic drinks available and fun seasonal options to choose from as well. Here are some we’ll be making on repeat next few months.

Orange Pomegranate Rosemary Mocktail

Everyone knows fall is apple and pumpkin season, but did you know that pomegranates are at their best around September as well? This pomegranate OJ mocktail from Mocktail Memories transitions beautifully between summer and fall with a balance of sweet and tangy flavors.

Caramel Apple Pie Mocktail

This drink from A Better Choice really does taste like apple pie in a glass. It’s made with fresh apple cider, caramel syrup, and cinnamon for a beverage so sweet and satisfying that you won’t even miss the booze.

Pumpkin Ginger Booch Mocktail

When we heard this mocktail from sophie had pumpkin and kombucha, we were sold immediately. It’s perfect for Halloween without being too sweet or candy-like. Some kombuchas do contain small amounts of alcohol, so be sure to choose one with the alcohol removed.

There is no month more autumn than October, when the leaves are finally changing, spooky Halloween decorations are being put up, and the weather is distinctly crisp, cool, and satisfying. That also means it’s the perfect time to make those classic fall recipes that you’ve been waiting for all summer. Here are three of our favorites.

Sweet Potato Lasagna

One of our favorite seasonal fall foods is sweet potato, which combines two of our favorite things (sweets and potatoes). This sweet potato lasagna recipe from Plant Based on a Budget is made with only a few ingredients: lentils, carrots, tomato sauce, vegan cheese, and lasagna sheets. Simple and delicious!

Butternut Squash Soup

Another classic autumn flavor is squash, with butternut squash being a popular favorite variety. This butternut squash soup recipe from Mari’s Garden and Kitchen is full of flavor and has a great, smooth texture. It tastes like fall in a bowl and you’ll find yourself wanting to make it all the time this season.

Apple Crumble

While we might be used to eating apples year-round, they’re actually seasonal in the fall, which might be why so many of our favorite fall desserts contain them. One of our favorite apple desserts is apple crumble, and we love this recipe from Working Mum’s Kitchen for how simple it is.

Are you sick of the endless, hot, sweaty days that you just can’t seem to get a break from? So are we. That’s why we’ve already started dreaming about fall, with its crisp weather, beautiful colors, and delicious baked goods. If your head and heart are already in fall mode, you can get a head start on the season by preparing your own homemade pumpkin spice mixture ahead of time to use in all sorts of baked recipes and caffeinated drinks. Here’s our favorite version of a DIY pumpkin spice mix.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

Directions

All you have to do is add all of the spices to a bowl and whisk them together until they’re combined evenly. Store them in an airtight container. If you think you’ll be using this a lot, feel free to double, triple, or quadruple the recipe.

Not sure what you can use your new homemade pumpkin spice for? Here are just some ideas:

  • Pumpkin pie
  • Muffins
  • Latte
  • Cupcakes
  • Cake
  • Cheesecake
  • Blondies
  • Pull-apart bread
  • Pudding
  • Mousse
  • Fudge
  • Scones
  • Hot cocoa

Now, where were our knee-high boots and denim jackets, again?

The leaves are changing and the temperatures are finally dropping, which means that fall is finally here after a long summer. Culinary traditions in fall are some of the best throughout the year, as they take advantage of the fresh ingredients that are at their peak in this season of transition.

If you love fruit, here are three fruits that are in-season that you should definitely take advantage of!

Pears

This fall fruit is fresh and ready for picking during this time of year. Not only is it great to eat by itself, but you can also use it in a variety of desserts. While cinnamon might commonly be associated with the next fruit on the list, this spice pairs perfectly with pears in some of the best sweet treats.

Apples

Apple cider, apple pie, and apple crisps. It’s that time of year again when apple trees all over the Northern Hemisphere bear fruits and put us into an apple frenzy. From September to November, take advantage of the bounty of apples both for snack eating as well as dessert and drink making!

Cranberries

Cranberries are an underrated fall treat that has a variety of uses. The tart flavor of cranberries goes great in cocktails and is also used in a classic fall side dish known as cranberry relish. In addition, cranberries are also a “superfood” that is full of vitamins and antioxidants.
