Drinking red wine in moderation has long been thought of to be beneficial for our health. This is because some studies suggest that the alcohol and antioxidants found in red wine may help prevent coronary artery disease, the condition that leads to heart attacks. But if that’s true, which wine is the healthiest?

It May Be Pinot Noir

A recent article published in Forbes claims that the healthiest type of wine is Pinot Noir, thanks to the fact it contains higher levels of resveratrol than other wine varieties. Resveratrol is a naturally occurring fungicide (a chemical that destroys fungus) found in grape skins. It might help prevent damage to blood vessels, reduce LDL cholesterol (the “bad” kind), and prevent blood clots.

This isn’t the first time experts pointed out the health benefits of pinot noir. A study published in 2015 found that those who drank dry red or dry white wine, including pinot noir, had improved levels of HDL cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol) compared to those who drank other varieties of wine.

In addition to pinot noir, there are other thin-skinned red grape wines that boast similar health benefits. Those include Grenache, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Nebbiolo, and Gamay. So if you’re looking for a reason to incorporate more red wine into your diet—there you have it, the perfect excuse.
