Apple crumble (or apple crisp) is one of those desserts that will transport you straight back to your grandma’s house. This traditional fall dessert is made with stewed green apples and cinnamon, with a crisp, oaty topping. We make ours with raspberries, coconut oil, and shredded coconut for a more summery twist on this classic dessert!

Ingredients:

For the Filling:

  • 4 large green apples, peeled and cut into small chunks
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1⁄4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup frozen raspberries

For the Crumble:

  • 1½ cups plain flour
  • ½ cup rolled oats
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1⁄3 cup shredded coconut
  • 4 tablespoons softened (but not melted) coconut oil

Instructions:

  1. Place the apples in a large pan, sugar and cinnamon in a large lidded pan, along with a splash of water.
  2. Simmer over a low heat until the apples are soft and just beginning to fall apart. This will take anywhere between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the apple variety you use.
  3. Once cooked, taste for sweetness and add more sugar accordingly.
  4. Take off the heat and leave to cool. If you are planning to eat the crumble straight away, preheat the oven to 350°.
  5. Make the crumble. Add all the ingredients to a large bowl and massage with your fingers until the consistency resembles uneven bread crumbs.
  6. Pour the apple mixture into a baking dish (at least 2 inches deep), and scatter the frozen raspberries on top. Top with the crumble topping and ensure the apples are evenly covered. Do not pack the crumble down.
  7. Pop the tray in the preheated oven and cook for around 35 minutes until the crumble is golden brown and crisp and the fruit is starting to bubble through.
  8. Serve with custard or vanilla ice cream and enjoy!
