Ordering a coffee is no longer as simple as it once was. These days, you have the choice between regular milk, soy milk, almond milk, oat milk, and a bunch of others. Milk alternatives like oat milk can be pricey, but it’s also super simple to make your own—here’s how.

Oats So Easy

To make oat milk you naturally need oats! Regular oats are perfectly fine, so don’t worry about getting the steel-cut kind.

Give Them a Soak

Water is the key to getting the oats plump, so soak them in some water for around 15 minutes to get them soft. Don’t let them soak for too long though… Once done, drain them with a fine-mesh strainer and rinse until the water runs clear to get rid of any starch.

Sweeten Up

Regular milk has a natural sweetness, so choose your favorite sweetener to add to the oats. Maple syrup, honey, and vanilla extract are great options.

Blend, Baby, Blend

Place the rinsed oats, sweetener, a pinch of salt, and 4 cups of water in a blender. Blend for around 30 seconds, until the mixture is smooth. When it has been fully blended, push it through the strainer and allow it to chill in the fridge.
