Having an Acne Breakout? Avoid These Foods

You’ve probably heard it before — your acne breakout is likely the result of the food you eat. But if you thought that pizza and salty chips were causing your face to break out, you may be happy to learn that that’s not true.

As dermatologist Dr. Melanie Palm told U.K.’s The Independent, “greasy or deep-fried foods do not cause acne.” But what does? Turns out, there are two food groups that you should avoid if you want flawless skin.

High Glycemic Index Foods

Foods that contain a lot of sugar and refined carbohydrates will rapidly raise your blood sugar levels and trigger a series of effects that will make your skin produce oil and make it prone to acne. This isn’t just true for processed candy and white flour bread; some fruits like watermelon can have the same effect.

Dairy

Another category of food that will make your skin break out is dairy, especially skim cow’s milk. The reasons for this include high-sugar content and hormones from the lactating cow. Yogurt and cheese are, however, safe choices.
